Fall & Winter
Autumn & Winter
Offering an abundance of activity throughout the year, Ashtabula
County is a great place to spend any season. When the summer crowds
dissipate and the days glow with gold-tinged fall and winter light, the county
takes on a rich, almost magical, splendor that will leave visitors with rich,
lasting memories.
Autumn
Ashtabula County's natural wonder
bursts with color in the fall. Each winding river, wooded trail, breathtaking
vista and expanse of lakeshore takes on added brilliance during the season of
mists.
The fall foliage provides the perfect backdrop for visiting the county's 16
covered bridges. These wonders of architecture and rustic beauty are especially
spotlighted during the second weekend of October during the Covered Bridge
Festival.
Autumn is a season of festivals. Along with the Covered Bridge Festival,
visitors will delight in the country and craft festivals held in Austinburg,
Jefferson, Geneva, Wayne and every corner of the county. Each celebration is
unique, from the Grape Jamboree to the Conneaut Oktoberfest. Haunted houses and
hayrides also rise up throughout the county. Those seeking a deep, profound
sense of history will want to take part in the Underground Railroad Pilgrimage
offered by the Hubbard House Museum.
Along with the sound of festivals and scents of the harvest, the gentle autumn
winds fill the air with romantic whispers, making this the perfect season for
couples, who will delight in everything from strolls along the shorelines to
smiles in a local restaurant. Many of the local accommodations offer special
get-away packages, including bottles of local wines.
Everyone is certain to delight in our fall activities. The turning autumn leaves
and
lush greens of the county's golf courses make ideal spots for a relaxing round
of golf. The AC&J High Grade train line continues to run from Jefferson to
Ashtabula through October, combining the sound of the rails with a breathtaking
view of Autumn's cascade of color.
Winter
As the shortened days glow with winter light, activity abounds in Ashtabula
County.
Winter sports enthusiasts find the state parks a perfect place for cross-country
skiing, ice skating, ice fishing, and ice sailing.
Those who prefer to be indoors will enjoy the array of holiday shopping
opportunities in Ashtabula County. Besides a beautiful mall, shoppers will find
shopping plazas and a number of unique stores throughout the county offering
everything from handmade baskets to hand blown glass, beads to gems, and Amish
to Scandinavian gifts. Unique shopping opportunities also abound in many of the
communities that dot the county. A stroll through the Ashtabula Harbor area or
around the Public Square in Andover is a perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Shoppers and outdoor enthusiasts alike work up a hunger, and local restaurants
offer steaming, tasty treats to take off the chill and satisfy every appetite.
Filled with snow and festivities, Ashtabula County is a wonderful place to be
during the holiday season. The days fill with the holiday spirit from the first
weekend of
December, beginning with An Ashtabula County Country Christmas. Sponsored by the
Ashtabula County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the weekend offers parades,
open houses, theatrical productions, as well as special lodging and shopping
discounts.
An old-fashioned Christmas can be found at the Ashtabula Arts Center with its
production of The Nutcracker performed throughout December while Conneaut hosts
a Christmas Ceremony and a madrigal dinner at the Conneaut Community Center.
Not only the place to find the perfect gift, Ashtabula County embodies the
spirit of the holiday season. Families can follow snow-covered trails to one of
the area Christmas tree farms in search of the perfect pine or spruce. Carolers
fill the crisp, early evenings with song. Museums are donned with bows and
greens. Local wineries offer holiday parties, and the scent of spices wafts
through the air as restaurants prepare to set out the holiday feast.
Throughout the year, visitors will find each season in
Ashtabula County is a unique, memorable celebration.
